In FY 2022-2023, the Hawaiʻi State Center for Nursing received the first round of funding from the State of Hawaiʻi budget for clinical faculty training. We continue to receive these funds annually. In FY 20232024, we continued to collaborate with Deans and Directors of schools of nursing across the state to determine how to best utilize these funds.
Program Goals
- By FY 2025-2026, 100% of clinical faculty who have been in their clinical faculty role for 1-3 years will report that they have received training.
- By FY 2027-2028, 100% of clinical faculty will report that they have received training.
- Each subsequent FY, at least 15% of Hawaii’s clinical faculty will report receiving ongoing professional development for the clinical faculty role.
Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce (CCNW) Clinical Faculty Training
FY 2022-2023 funding was used to support 47 clinical faculty across the state to complete the Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce’s Clinical Faculty Training course. This is a 3-week course offered online with assignments due twice a week.
Evaluation Outcomes
97% of the clinical faculty who participated in this course agreed that all the learning outcomes were met. Learning outcomes for this course included:
- Understanding the expectations and purpose of the clinical faculty role.
- Develop and implement a clinical orientation process for students and/or faculty.
- Assess students’ readiness for clinical assignments.
- Anticipate and plan response to issues that may arise in the clinical setting.
- Effectively manage students’ post-clinical conference sessions.
- Evaluate students’ clinical competencies based on course objectives.
- Support unsuccessful students based on legal & ethical guidelines.
Majority of clinical faculty participants felt the course was valuable and made them a more confident clinical instructor. Other feedback was that the course was intensive and difficult to complete while maintaining their full-time teaching schedules.
